The Esther Horne Native American Collection
The Richland County Historical Museum has a large collection of Native American artifacts, representing over a dozen tribal nations from around the country. The bulk of the collection was donated to the museum by Esther Horne, the great, great granddaughter of Sacajewea. Esther was an educator, an advocate, and an adventurer. In 1955, she was approached by Greater Clarkson Associate, a group making plans to recreate the journey of Lewis and Clark in honor of the sesquicentennial of the expedition. As a descendant of Sacajawea, Horne was invited to join the journey. The expedition left in a motorcade from Fort Mandan on July 27, 1955 and arrived at the Oregon coast on August 4th. The following year, Esther was invited on the return journey east.. The traditional buckskin dress she wore for the expeditions is part of the museum's collection. Esther and her husband, Robert, taught at the Wahpeton Indian School, now the Circle of Nations School, for over thirty years. Their collection, which includes beadwork items, quill work, moccasins, War clubs, pottery, baskets and more was donated upon their retirement in 1956.
